Mwakore Self Help Group is a community initiative that was started up by the youth of Kasigau community in order to help restore their hopes are resurcitate their faded aspirations in life through pulling up locally available resources and use them to generate income. The group engages in income generating activities such as dress making and capentry, farming and livestock rearing. Majority of the youth are affected by drug and substance abuse,

As part of achieving the millennium development goals, the group has been at the forefront of sensitizing the young women and the community at large on the emerging issues that affect their community and the society. Through empowerment, the women have found something tangible that has made them own up with the community and feel part of it.

Aims of the project

  • To promote inter-cultural exchage enhancing global peace and understanding.
  • To promote people centered development fostered by international cooperation.

Work camp Activities

  • Feeding programme.
  • Farm work, including land preparation.
  • Community work.
  • Working on the groups' livestock farm.
  • HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
  • Environmental activities

Participation Cost

VoDA solely depends on volunteer contributions to support our activities. The participation fee for the work camp is 350Euros for 3 weeks or 500 US dollars. The contribution you make is used as follows:

The participation fee is to be paid in full and in cash upon your arrival in Nairobi. You can either pay in Euro or in Kenya Shillings, based on the current exchange rate. ATMs accepting credit cards and bank cards of all major banks can be found near the VoDA office. Forex bureaus for changing money are in the city centre of Nairobi.

Meeting Point and Orientation

All volunteers taking part in this project will be picked from the Airport (Nairobi) and stay in Nairobi before departing for the project. Orientation will take place on the 6th of September 2012.

Number of volunteers: Maximum of 30

What's Included

  • Airport Pickup: Volunteers will be picked from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (Airport Code: NBO).
  • Accommodation: Volunteers will be hosted at the project. You will need to have a sleeping bag and mat.
  • Food: Food is provided from what is locally available and the volunteers will share in the responsibility of preparing the food.
  • Transport to the Project, To and Fro.

What's not Included

The following costs are NOT included:

  • Flights to and from Nairobi.
  • Travel Insurance.
  • Visa costs.
  • Cost of drinks like soda, beer, mineral water etc.
  • Cost of sightseeing.
  • Local traveling
